Who was your Harry Potter?

Back on July 19th, the New York Times posted the following questions on their blog: "Who was your Harry Potter?" and "What were your favorite books when you were a kid?"
For me, I had to read all of the Nancy Drew books. There was also a non-fiction series called "We were there" and I know I read a lot of those. The biography series published by Dodd Mead kept me reading for quite some time too.
What were your favorite authors or series when you were growing up?

My Harry Potter was Alanna from the Song of the Lioness quartet by Tamora Pierce. Every time I would go to the library I would hold my breath hoping that there would be a new one, not quite realizing how long it took for books to be published. Today I own that quartet and all that followed. In fact, Tamora Pierce is still setting novels in the fantastical land of Tortall and I still get just as excited when a new title comes out as I did when I was a teenager.

I had to read all of the "Little House" books by Laura Ingalls Wilder - in order, of course. Also, the B is for Betsy series by Carolyn Haywood. When I reached junior high, an aunt gave me her collection of Agatha Christie books and I tried to read all of those.
There wasn't anything even remotely akin to the hoopla surrounding the publication of a new Harry Potter book.

My Harry Potter was anything written by S.E. Hinton. I started reading The Outsiders and was drawn into a life of far beyond my safe suburban neighborhood. After reading The Outsiders I was hooked and had to read everything Hinton wrote. Next was That Was Then This Was Now, followed by Rumble Fish and Tex. Recently, I read the authors first novel for adults Hawkes Harbor. This novel is quite different from the types of books I usually read it also draws you into a different world.
